How did Friday get here so quickly? School starts back for us next week so we are going to try to squeeze every last minute of fun time with our families. In wrapping up our description of a week-long feeding therapy “boot camp”, we thought this cartoon would be perfect! Thanks to Rick Detorie for the wonderful One Big Happy humor.
Readers, what strategies have you tried to distract your children while eating?
With our older son (5yr) we sometimes let him read National Geographic Kids at the table which he likes. We also started giving him flash cards with words on them that he tries to read, which strangely he enjoys doing. Now if only these strategies would work with my little one!!
I long for a world where we don’t have to reinforce children to eat. Just this past weekend, I had a heated discussion with the girls about food. When it is junk food (e.g., pizza, hot dogs, gold fish and the like) they inhale their food quickly and without distractions. However, when it is healthy food we get comments like “how much do I have to eat”, “I don’t feel so well”, and “I’m not hungry”. Sadly, our society has grown to crave the very foods that are hurting us and that leaves us dealing with mealtime behaviors!
