hello, im in a aba masters program and was wondering what is the proper way to ask someone to be your bcba supervisor.
Hi Gabby,
This is a great question! You want a supervisor with many characteristics. You want someone with experience, a good track record, and high standards. You also want someone who is a practicing behavior analyst using applied, clinical, or experimental approaches. And while having one supervisor keeps things “clean”, it is really in your best interest to locate several supervisors who will share the work load.
The best way to ask…..flattery gets you everywhere. Research the person, find out what he/she does well, and then tell him/her that is why you want to work with him/her.
Good luck!
Hi there! Where is your clinic located? I’d love to connect with you, I have an behavioral feeding program in Denver, CO!

My son is 4 1/2 and has the pee thing down but he will NOT poop in the toilet. We have tried a sticker chart, candy 1 for pee and 2 for poop, still he poops in his pants. This weekend I caught him pushed poop out and grabbed him and ran to the toilet and he pushed a bit and it fell in the toilet. I praised him and gave him hugs, 2 candy’s, ice cream and a fish because that is what I promised him for poop in the toilet. Tonight he pooped in his pants twice. Right back to square one. Also we have 4 poop books, he has watched his parents go poop on the potty and we have watched kis utube potty training videos. Any suggestions? Please help!
Hi Micha,
Thanks for stopping by the blog. Congrats on getting your child toilet trained for urine!!!
Poop can definitely be harder. Great job on also “running” him to the toilet so the poop fell in and also pairing that with a treat.
It is recommended that you first figure out WHEN poop usually happens. You can do this by charting it for 7-10 days. You should also carefully document any posturing that occurs with pooping. Most kids squat, hide behind a chair, go to the corner, etc.
Then your job is to WATCH!!!!! Catch him before it happens and rush to the toilet. I wouldn’t provide much reaction when the poop happens in the pants. You could require him to help clean up.
Definitely identify a treat that is ONLY available for pooping on the toilet. Keep that treat up high on a shelf and give it anytime poop happens in the toilet, even if it is only part of the poop. Good luck!
My 8 year old daughter Donna is aggressive, and throws things at me whenever I mention pooping. She will not poop in the toilet! We are scared for her because she continues to have accidents at school. We are worried because she gets teased and then pursues to become violent, Toward her teachers and fellow classmates. Please help!
Hi Jessica, I apologize for the delay in responding to your question. I had previously written a response and somehow it got deleted. So here goes again……..
The first thing that we recommend is for an assessment to be completed. This assessment will include a rule out of underlying medical conditions. For example, is there a GI condition that is contributing to this problem. If Donna does not have a BM every day, then something is not working correctly. Different conditions can contribute to constipation and this includes food allergies/intolerances as well as motility issues or intestinal blockages. We would not want to start any treatment until we are sure that things are flowing freely from mouth to toilet.
A second rule out would be to analyze her eating habits. We do this because a restricted diet can cause constipation problems. We would want her to eat a wide variety of healthy foods so that she is more inclined to have healthy, easy, daily BMs.
A third medical rule out would involve working with your pediatrician and/or nutritionist to determine if Donna has an nutritional deficiencies. Sometimes the addition of fish oil and/or magnesium citrate will promote daily, pain free BMs.
Once we know that there are no medical reasons why she is having trouble around having BMs, we would then complete a functional behavior assessment (FBA). You can read more about FBAs on our blog by searching in the search box from our home page. We would assess to determine why she is having difficulties. Maybe she is scared of the auto flush? Or maybe the flush is too loud? Or maybe she gets a lot of attention for not using the toilet? Or maybe she doesn’t understand where the poop goes when it comes out of her body?
The assessment would also include a preference assessment to better understand what Donna would be willing to work for in return for having a BM on the toilet.
Once the FBA and preference assessment are completed, the BCBA would work with you and the school team to develop an appropriate BM protocol. This protocol would include some antecedent changes as well as some skill development. The plan would include reinforcement for tolerating sitting on the toilet and even bigger/better reinforcement for producing a BM on the toilet.
You can find a BCBA in your area by visiting the BACB website and locating a BCBA by state, town, or zip code. Be sure to interview the BCBA to make sure that this type of programming is within his/her scope of practice/skill set.
If you live in the US, there is a good chance this would be covered under your health insurance. However, this varies from state to state and policy to policy.
Good luck! Be sure to give us an update!!
